Crises rock ANN as it’s BOT chairman Nkata Chuku , Elishama dissociate self from Convention
The crises rocking the opposition Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN) deepened yesterday as its board of trustees (BOT) chairman, Dr Nkata Chuku dissociated himself from the national convention of the party.
Chuku’s position is coming less than 24 hours after a leading presidential aspirant of the party, Dr Elishama Ideh withdrew her membership of the party whose national convention billed to hold yesterday in Abuja , the federal capital territory (FCT).
Chuku justified his decision saying it was borne out of the fact that the processes leading to the conduct of the national convention was fraught with irregularities.
Chuku threw his weight behind the decision by Ideh and two of the party’s presidential candidates who contended that the party had been hijacked by an unregistered member of the party keen on vying for the presidency in the 2019 poll.
According to him: “If this convention holds as structured now, we would have laid a faulty foundation that will haunt us forever. Parties are not about winning elections in the short term and ANN creed clearly says that.
” I dissociate myself from this convention and call on all ANN members of good conscience to do the same.
“As painful as it will be, let’s step back, get our processes right and hold a transparent and proper national convention where all aspirants and party members have a level playing field.
We can hold a proper convention before the end of the month which still allows us to meet INEC timelines.
” am convinced that the current atmosphere will not produce the leadership or decisions that reflect the wishes of most ANN members, the vision and ideologies we set out with and sold to the Nigerians and the world.
“I remain convinced that ANN started with the right ideals and will lead Nigeria out of the doldrums is we stick to that. Unfortunately it seems our inexperience has led to grievous mistakes that if not corrected now will undermine everything we claim to stand for.”
Ideh who assured that she would surely pursue her presidential ambition in the 2019 poll on the platform of any of the registered political parties in the country however declined to disclosed the identity of the person behind the hijack of the ANN structure.
According to her: “As things stand at the moment, the party structure has been hijacked by certain character. Interestingly, up till now, this character has not as much as declared his interest in running. It is evident that there is no level playing field for aspirants on the platform of the party and we are being sidelined in the agreed processes.”
